I went to get my oil changed this week at Sharon Automotive. While I was waiting, a sales person came into the shop. The owner was on the floor so I was the only one in the sales area and clearly sitting in the waiting area. He opened the door and stuck his head in which struck me as odd. He then asked me if I work there. I was sitting in the waiting area playing a game on my phone. If I worked there, I was a TERRIBLE employee. So I said no, but I was sure the owner would be right back. He then walked in. The owner came out and asked if he could help this person. So this is where it got awful. Branding Lessons from the Voice

We watch the Voice each week. It is fun and entertaining. The interesting thing is each singer has the same challenges as small businesses – what is their brand? Each singer has to determine what will make them “unique”. Of course we can all think of singers who are unique. There will never be another Cher, Aretha, Johnny Cash, Rob Zombie, etc. Crooners will come and go but we’ll still buy Christmas music sung by Bing Crosby, Dean Martin and Vaughn Monroe (what? You don’t have Vaughn Monroe? You are totally missing out!!!). So as a new voice on the block, how do you identify what makes you unique? You might say everything has been done. Brains Are Not For Picking

I do a lot of networking – like 24 hours a month. I meet many new people and some of them are really cool. My least favorite thing to hear when meeting a new person is, “I would love to pick your brain”. Yeah, I know. Now don’t get me wrong. When I first started my business I found this flattering. I would schedule coffee with the person, usually have to buy my own, sit and tell them the answers to many of their questions. They walked away feeling great about me and I knew I had helped someone. Go me. But over time I realized these people weren’t then sending me business or in some way returning the favor.
