How often do you give referrals? If you are in small business, I hope the answer is all the time. But it can be hard to give referrals because the opportunity comes around and you don’t recognize it for what it is until the moment is passed. So here are some ways to help yourself. Start by making a list of people who provide you amazing service and / or people you would like to refer. This is a fun list to make because you get to think about all the people who don’t make you crazy, who help you get through your day and help solve your problems. Dressing for Success

Obviously, everyone knows it is important to dress for success. But that means different things to different people.  With the weather getting nicer, people are getting more casual and while that’s great – I’m all for casual – I’ve seen some things that bring up concerns. If you are going to wear shorts to an event or outing, they should be work-appropriate.  Anything that can be described as “cut off” is, by definition, not work appropriate.  It doesn’t matter your age or body shape. It is a good idea to look at school dress codes here for guidance.  If the shorts are shorter than your fingertips with your arms down, they are not a good choice for a work event.  And if you think I’m being sexist, the ones I saw were on a guy. Medina County Women’s Journal Brings Back Athena Awards

Kelli Cole-Wagner and I at the Athena Awards. The Medina County Women’s Journal editor attended an Athena Awards event and wanted to bring it to Medina County. What a simple statement! Of course anyone who has ever organized an event knows it was much, much more than this simple statement. Add to that the need to get nominations, set up a screening committee, organize multiple events and make the first awards something that can continue in future years is a very tall order. But Kelli Cole-Wagner and her right hand Tara Haley made it happen. They pulled off a great event with wonderful people and we all had a ball.
