I was reading an article on how to write effective blog posts for a class I’m teaching and the writer mentioned that in the 1980s, very few people had a remote control for their TV. Just 10 years later, almost everyone had a remote. Suddenly, it wasn’t any effort at all to change the channel. Â Gone were the jokes about making your kids do it, etc. and in came the “channel surfing” ones. All of a sudden people writing shows and commercials had to account for people changing the channel. And it changed everything. One thing that is in the process of changing now is how the DVR will change things again. Now, you don’t ever sit through commercials because you can fast forward. Reimagine Your 30 Second Commercial
A friend of mine teaches a class on journaling. Â One of the exercises she does is to have her students write the title of the movie written about their life. Â It is an interesting exercise and in a room of 15 women, not one had a problem coming up with an answer. Â Periodically ideas for movie titles like this pop in my head. Sitting in the dentist’s chair this week I wanted to name her book, “Everyone is a great listener when your hands are in their mouth”. Â Long, but if you saw that on a bookshelf, you would at least read the back, right? So since I was just sitting there with not much to do, I started thinking. Losing the Visual and Tone
Recently I attended a meeting where the speaker raised a concern that people of my generation like to use email for communication. She felt this is a problem because you lose the look of the person as they are conveying the message as well as the way they would say it if they could be heard. And while I love seeing people in person, at the same time one of my favorite things is learning about people without the baggage. Here’s what I mean. I’m a gamer. I play with people all over the country and periodically in other countries. Our main way to communicate is through a small chat window.
