Got a post on Facebook today of 10 secrets of the hospitality industry. Along with the “never pay minibar charges” and the glasses have no spots because they wipe them down with pledge (ewwww), it got me thinking; what secrets are there in other industries? When I placed temps, the big secret was if you wanted work, call us. A lot. Keeping your name top of mind was key. So, if you were asked to write the X secrets of your industry, what would they be? The Remote and DVRs
I was reading an article on how to write effective blog posts for a class I’m teaching and the writer mentioned that in the 1980s, very few people had a remote control for their TV. Just 10 years later, almost everyone had a remote. Suddenly, it wasn’t any effort at all to change the channel. Â Gone were the jokes about making your kids do it, etc. and in came the “channel surfing” ones. All of a sudden people writing shows and commercials had to account for people changing the channel. And it changed everything. One thing that is in the process of changing now is how the DVR will change things again. Now, you don’t ever sit through commercials because you can fast forward. Consider the Context
Recently I’ve had a bunch of things happen that were misunderstandings because people didn’t understand each other’s context. They are usually pretty funny, but also not a great way to do business. For instance, I was contacted by someone working at a company who’s name has “sheep” in the title. Because of my client base, I immediately thought wool and knit products and read her information with that context. Turns out it is a religious thing. Who knew? Another one is as a huge science fiction fan, the word “frak” is a swear word replacing the more traditional F word. So imagine how jarring it was the first time someone talked about “fracking” when it came to oil drilling in a meeting!
