Behavioral interviewing is a method of interviewing asking candidates for real situations they were in to help get a feel for how well they could handle required tasks and fit into your organization. It is really capitalizing on our ability to take a story and pull out meaning. Asking a candidate, “Can you do X?†results in a yes/no response but asking them to describe a time they did X results in a story. According to Dr. Stuart Brown of the National Institute of Play said, “The unit of intelligibility is the storyâ€. Finding people’s contact information and information that makes a cold call warm is always time consuming and can be frustrating. But here’s a new tool I’ve just started using that I love—www.pipl.com . Run it on yourself—you will find all the places your information comes up on the web! I have been really impressed with this tool because it found references I haven’t found through any other searching method. I was able to locate an old colleague of mine who has eluded all my attempts to find her information in the past. We were both thrilled when PIPL worked. I’ve been talking to a number of people who are interviewing right now and found some facinating things going on in the hiring world today. Â One person up for a Vice President role was given an application to fill out – no really. Â He was suppose to send his social security number on the form via email. Â Really? Â In this age of identity theft, he was going to send his social security number through an insecure media like email? Â He declined. Â Next, he had to put in his high school and college, extra-curriculars at both and grade point at both institutions. Â This individual has been out of high school 20 years!
