Had a couple interesting experiences in the last couple days regarding thinking outside the box. Â The first, I’m happy to say, I started. Â I needed an exercise to help students recognize that the work world is different. Â I took 17 random shapes in a variety of colors and put them on an 8.5 x 11 sheet of paper. Â Then each group was given crayons. Â One person from each group could come up and look at the paper for 30 seconds and draw for one minute. Â This would happen 4 times. Â On the third round I actually swapped out the drawing for something slightly different (shapes were moved and colors changed). Failure – What It Isn’t
The third week of the month is always a big one for meetings and the first month of the quarter is especially challenging. I typically end up at 5 lunches with networking, a speaker, and more networking. Â This month, for whatever reason, everyone wanted to talk about “don’t be afraid to fail”. Â I’m struggling with this because I don’t think I know what they mean so I’ve come here to work it through. Thanks for indulging me! When I launched my business, it was because I had spent 5 months consulting while looking for a job (keep in mind it was 2009) and realized I could never find a job that gave me as much variety and interesting work as consulting. Commitment is a Good Thing
Someone asks you to schedule a meeting that you really want to have. You want to be accommodating and flexible because you REALLY REALLY REALLY want this person to like you and do business with you. You tell them to name the time and place and you will be there. You are asked to write a testimonial for someone. Not knowing all the applications they may use it you say something generically positive and then offer people to contact you for more information. Someone asks you who your best customer or target market is. You don’t want to miss an opportunity so you detail out all of the possibilities. In each one of these cases, the intent is a good one.
