A friend of mine teaches a class on journaling. Â One of the exercises she does is to have her students write the title of the movie written about their life. Â It is an interesting exercise and in a room of 15 women, not one had a problem coming up with an answer. Â Periodically ideas for movie titles like this pop in my head. Sitting in the dentist’s chair this week I wanted to name her book, “Everyone is a great listener when your hands are in their mouth”. Â Long, but if you saw that on a bookshelf, you would at least read the back, right? So since I was just sitting there with not much to do, I started thinking. Â What makes you pick up a book and read the back cover? Is it always the art work? Or is it the title? or what? […] Continue reading
Evaluating Networking Events
So last week I talked about how you should never stop marketing. Â And you shouldn’t. And if you didn’t read it, go back and do so. Â Okay – back? Â Good! Â For my business, advertising, etc. makes no sense. People can’t understand what I can do for them until they meet me. Â So I have to network to get the word out about me. First, I look at a networking event to see what are they trying to accomplish. Â If the point is to get members for a particular organization, I try to see if I would want to join. It isn’t fair to attend if I’m not going to take […] Continue reading
When To Stop Networking
WHAT??? Oh sorry – went off the deep end a little there. Â Had a friend ask me recently how I “restart” my marketing efforts when I stop. Â I must admit I had a hard time not sighing or making a face. Â When asked, I think the number one problem of micro-business owners today is under capitalization. Â But only slightly less known is the dreaded marketing-until-you-get-enough-work cycle (channeling a little Princess Bride there. Sorry about that). Â It is vital to NEVER STOP MARKETING. Period. The end. Okay, so how do we do that? For me, it is a matter of calendar allocation. Â Doesn’t that sound cool? Â First, every activity on my calendar is color-coded. Â Outlook lets me do that through categories so I can assign a color to everything – green are customers, light green are prospects, teal is networking, gold is chamber, etc. Â At a […] Continue reading
