My computer finally died last week after a valiant struggle to keep going. Â On my new one, I figured it was a good time to bite the bullet and install Windows 8 that I hadn’t heard a single good thing about, but knew was necessary. Â Boy was I surprised! Â It is great! Â Here’s what I’ve liked so far:
First, the start up screen is completely customizable. Â I will say I’m not a desktop storage person and generally have 3 things on the desktop so it doesn’t bother me that it isn’t the first thing I see. But I LOVE having the applications I use most that handy. Â I have completely reorganized it from the defaults and now I am super-efficient. (To do this, right click on an app to remove or go to All Apps and select “Pin to Startup”.)
Second, performance wise it is awesome. My computer is a big beefy machine and it is SILENT. Â The fan has kicked on ONCE in a week.
Third, Â the hardware, driver, and Control Panel stuff is great. I’ve already learned some new tools to use to check stuff out and it has been a snap to get all my devices installed and working. Â In fact, my printer was set up before I even found the disk automatically! Go Windows!
I think most people’s objections are so much to Windows 8 as the changes in Office. Â That is the place we all spend most of our time. Â I’m always amazed at the features that get removed or changed as they are generally things I love so I’m still struggling through that. Â Can’t find how to do several things that are important. But the important thing here is Microsoft put features in to help people use their computer more efficiently. Â If you need a new computer, don’t be afraid of Windows 8!
